Research Interests
Lesbian/gay families; community context; rituals; generativity; victimization; qualitative methods
My overall research program examines how lesbian and gay men construct their families within specific contexts, how family member well being is shaped by external factors (e.g., community climate, legal status), and the ways in which family members take action to improve their communities. I have an ongoing program to investigate these questions within the downstate Illinois region. Specifically, my students, colleagues, are I are currently addressing the following questions:
1. What specific features of residential communities (including legal protections) contribute to a supportive climate for lesbian and gay men and their families?
2. How does community climate for homosexuality contribute to anti-gay victimization?
3. How do nonmetropolitan lesbian and gay parents manage their family identities when out in public?
Regarding potential graduate students, I am most interested in recruiting students who want to conduct research into the family lives of lesbians and gay men.
