About soo ah kwon
I am an interdisciplinary scholar trained as a cultural educational anthropologist. I received my doctorate in Social and Cultural studies at UC Berkeley’s School of Education, a Master’s in Education at Stanford University, and majored in Anthropology as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. I am a Californian—I grew up in Los Angeles and spent my higher education years in the Bay Area. Before settling in the Midwest, I was a postdoctoral fellow at Teacher’s College at Columbia University. I joined the UIUC faculty in Fall 2006 and hold a joint appointment in Asian American Studies and Human and Community Development. I am a faculty member of the Community Studies and Outreach (CSO) program in HCD. At the University of Illinois, I teach undergraduate courses on Asian American youth and Asian American communities and a graduate seminar that critically examines youth as social category of analysis.
