What I like best about Illinois: It offers a lot to do for graduate students considering its size! There are lots of good, local restaurants and hangout spots for us as well. Champaign-Urbana is a progressive community in close proximity to Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.
As an HCD graduate student I love that the students offer a lot of support for one another. There are also lots of opportunities for learning, whether through internships, teaching, conducting research, or editing manuscripts. I feel that everyone in the department is friendly, supportive, and encouraging. Because HDFS is not a very large department, there is a sense that everyone knows each other and their interests.
I chose Illinois because of the HCD department's prestige and its multidisciplinary approach to research and teaching. You are encouraged to collaborate amongst the faculty in the department and also across departments. This flexibility was really important to me.
