AGED 350 EARLY FIELD EXPERIENCE

2 hours (lecture-discussion)

Course Objectives

Provides agricultural education students with field experience in an educational setting prior to enrollment in student teaching. A minimum of 50 hours of observation and participatory experiences at a cooperating school are required for satisfactory completion of this class. This supervised experience with an agriculture teacher in the summer involves planning summer work, planning for teaching adult classes if possible, becoming acquainted with the techniques of supervising the agricultural experience programs of high school and adult students, working with school sponsored-organizations, becoming acquainted with the techniques and materials used when advising and guiding students, study the community, becoming acquainted with and oriented to the facilities used for agricultural education, study the agriculture curriculum and program characteristics, and becoming familiar with situations which students will later find themselves while doing their twelve weeks of student teaching during the school year.

  • Engage preservice teachers in non-formal field experiences with an agriculture teacher to collect information, observe supervision of FFA and SAE activities, and make plans for the student teaching internship
  • Reflect on field experiences and cases, and engage in discussions that promote professional development
  • Analyze cases in Agricultural Education and complete authentic assessments to develop problem-solving and decision-making skills related to creating course curricula, advising FFA activities, and supervising agricultural experiences
  • Review teacher certification requirements and apply for teacher certification
  • Synthesize artifacts created throughout the Agricultural Education curriculum to develop a teacher certification portfolio that meets state, UIUC, and program requirements
