Articles: All articles for the course are to be purchased at Notes & Quotes at 502 E. John in Champaign. Articles will be available after Labor Day Weekend.
Goals of the Course:
The course has been designed to aquatint you with some factors of illness, other than the specific diseases, that have an impact on children and their families. Specifically we will be looking at:
* stress produced as a result chronic and/or terminal illness and
repeated hospitalization.
* the manner in which sick children, their parents and siblings
react to this stress.

* the role of Child Life programs and Child Life Specialists in
reducing the stress of illness and hospitalization, as well as
encouraging continued normal development.

* how play and expressive activities can help sick children adjust
to illness and hospitalization.

* the response of families and health care staff facing death of a
child.

* some common childhood illnesses that require hospitalization
and concentrated medical care.

In order to meet these goals there are certain objectives that you will be expected to complete over the course of the semester.

From assigned readings and discussions it is expected that you will be able to gain some knowledge about working with children and families who are dealing with illness. The recall, review and exchange of information and reactions with others in the class should facilitate your ability to orally express the concepts, facts and terminology pertaining to the topic.

- Complete assigned readings before each class each week. You will be expected to turn in a short reaction paper for each set of readings. These must be turned in at the beginning of each class period. No late papers for this assignment to be accepted.

- Attend each class session and be prepared to discuss assigned readings.

Class projects will help you to apply knowledge from readings and discussions in a concrete form. You will be able to gain some detailed information about one particular disease and relevant medical terminology, as well as practice and refine your library research and writing skills.

- Complete a quiz on medical terms and child life definitions.

- Complete an 8-10 page paper on a childhood illness and its effect on children and families.

- Oral presentation of your paper about the illness you=ve researched, its effects on the child and his/her family, and how child life specialists and other personnel can help cope.
