HDFS 500 professional development
1 hour (seminar)
Fall Semesters
Course Objectives
This course orients students to professional development issues in both academic careers and applied careers in human development and family studies. We consider the different kinds of academic institutions (e.g., Research 1 institutions, teaching-oriented colleges) and of applied organizations (e.g., university-based research centers, Cooperative Extension, other organizations) in which students can pursue careers. We examine the professional skills and competencies that students need to develop in order to succeed in varying career tracks. We also learn about practical issues in obtaining approval for human subjects research, submitting work for conference presentation and publication, and developing successful grant proposals. Students are required to make a research presentation.
