Course objectives

We will examine and critique contemporary family theories, their historical development, and their use in family research. Because dual-degree students use this seminar to fulfill an AAMFT requirement, we will pay special attention to family systems theory. • Explain the core concepts within each theory and how they are linked.
  • Critique the strengths and weaknesses of each theory.
  • Explain the differences and similarities between each theory.
  • Use a theory to develop a model of family phenomenon that is of interest to you.
  • Discuss how family theory has changed over time.
