Undergraduate Programs
Clubs and Activities
Student life in HCD offers more than just books and classes! Students in the department, along with many students from other majors in the College of ACES and across campus, support three clubs that offer professional development opportunities, community and college service activities, and plenty of fun.
- Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT)
- Agricultural Education Club
- Human Interest Professions (HIP) Club
Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow
ACT -- Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow was founded in 1970 by students at the University of Illinois and other universities to build bridges between students and professional agricultural communicators. ACT helps members learn about career opportunities in the growing agricultural communications field from those who work in it. Each year, UI ACT members attend the national ACT conference, held in conjunction with the Agricultural Relations Council, the Cooperative Communications Association, or another national professional organization, where they meet top prefessionals -- including many former UI ACT alumni.
The local ACT chapter meets monthly for a workshop or presentation by local agricultural communicator. You'll almost always find ACT members in leadership roles at college activities, whether it's coordinating and promoting the annual ExplorACES celebration or getting involved in campus service activities.
For more information about ACT at UI, contact ACT faculty advisor Bob Siebrecht (143 Bevier Hall, 333-4786, siebrech@uiuc.edu).
Agricultural Education Club (Alpha Tau Alpha)
Alpha Tau Alpha at Illinois promotes the highest standards of agricultural education and a more intimate acquaintance and closer relationship with individuals who have chosen a major in agricultural education or extension education. The University of Illinois is the Alpha chapter of ATA. The Ag Ed Club faculty advisor is Corey Flournoy (139 Bevier Hall, 244-7286, cflourno@uiuc.edu).
Human Interest Professions Club
Twice voted the Best Student Club in the College of ACES, the Human Interest Professions Club provides students with opportunities to volunteer in the community, enhance their leadership skills, and develop as professionals. Originally organized for students majoring in Human Development and Family Studies, the HIP Club has grown to involve students from many different human services-related majors across the entire UI campus,
The HIP Club's forte is volunteer work and organized events with people in the community. Members volunteer at local soup kitchens and nursing homes, support area charities, and participate in events to raise awareness of children's issues. Each year the club sponsors a Halloween party for children at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
HIP Club members are also prominent in College of ACES activities, including ExplorACES and the College's leadership development programs. The club's faculty advisors are Dr. Christy Lleras (2026 Christopher Hall, clleras@uiuc.edu) and Dr. Nancy McElwain (2024 Christopher Hall, mcelwn@uiuc.edu).
