Undergraduate Programs


Programs of Study

The Department of Human and Community Development offers programs leading to the B.S. in Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences degree in two major areas: Human Development and Family Studies and Agricultural and Environmental Communications and Education.

 

Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)

Students in this major specialize in one of two concentrations: Child and Adolescent Development or Family Studies. Graduates can become:
  • Early childhood educators
  • Child life specialists
  • Counselors for troubled youth and their families
  • Caseworkers helping children in foster or adoptive homes
  • Directors of child-care centers
  • Family life educators

HDFS undergraduates can also prepare for graduate work in HDFS or for graduate programs in marriage and family therapy, social work, education, psychology, medicine, law, and business. Students interested in academic careers (college-level teaching and research) should talk with the HCD Director of Graduate Programs, Dr. Ramona Oswald (333-2547, roswald@uiuc.edu).

 

Agricultural and Environmental Communications and Education (AECE)

Students in this major choose among concentrations in Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) Communications, Agricultural Leadership Education, and Agricultural Education. Students in ACES communications specialize further in advertising, broadcasting, or news-editorial. AECE graduates become:

  • News reporters and editors
  • Public relations representatives
  • Advertising specialists
  • Broadcasters
  • Trade association representatives
  • Extension educators
  • High school teachers
  • Environmental communicators

AECE graduates also pursue advanced training in law, business, education, and environmental studies.
